Dickens, Charles, pseudonym Boz, engl. Romanschriftsteller, geb. 7. Febr. 1812 zu Landport bei Portsmouth, gest. 9. Juni 1870 auf seinem Landgut bei London, begründete seinen Ruf durch »Sketches of London« (1836-37), bes. aber durch die »Pickwick Papers« (1837-38), denen zahlreiche andere Romane aus dem engl. Volksleben voll scharfer Anschaulichkeit und reichem Humor (»Oliver Twist«, »Nicholas Nickleby«, »David Copperfield« etc.), sowie seit 1843 moralisch-phantastische Weihnachtsschriften (»A christmas carol« etc.) folgten; 1850 gründete er die Wochenschrift »Household Words« (seit 1860: »All the Year round«). Seine Werke oft ins Deutsche übersetzt. »Letters of D.« (3. Bde., 1879-80). – Biogr. von Forster (deutsch 1872-75), Marzials (1887), Heichen (1898), Kitton (1902), Fitzgerald (1905).
